Online Trauma Therapy in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions before getting started? Below are answers to the most common questions about trauma therapy, telehealth, fees, confidentiality, and what to expect at Next Mission Recovery. If your question isn’t listed, feel free to contact me.
Do you only treat trauma?
While my clinical focus is trauma-informed care, I also treat a range of mental health concerns, including mood and personality disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and co-occurring conditions. Treatment is tailored to the individual and may draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and interpersonal and attachment-based interventions.
What if I live outside of Virginia?
At this time, I am licensed to provide therapy to residents of Virginia. Licensure expansion is in process for California, with services expected to become available in late 2025.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
No. I provide therapy exclusively online using a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Telehealth ensures accessibility, consistency, and privacy. California residents are encouraged to check back in Fall 2025 for updates on virtual and in-person therapy availability.
How do I get started?
Begin with a complimentary 15-minute consultation. This gives us a chance to explore your goals, address questions, and assess fit. If we decide to proceed, we’ll schedule your first session and collaboratively design a treatment plan.
Do you accept insurance?
Next Mission Recovery is a self-pay practice and does not accept insurance. This allows for increased privacy and flexibility in care. Upon request, I can provide a monthly superbill for clients seeking out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan—please contact your provider directly to confirm benefits.
How are payments made?
A valid credit or debit card is kept securely on file and charged prior to each session. All major credit cards are accepted.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made with fewer than 24 hours’ notice are subject to a fee of 50% of the full session rate. No-shows and missed appointments without notice will be charged the full session fee. If you are more than 15 minutes late without prior communication, the session may be canceled.
How long does therapy take?
The duration of therapy depends on your goals, symptoms, and readiness. Some clients engage in short-term, protocol-based treatment (8–16 sessions), while others prefer ongoing support. The frequency and length of care are always determined collaboratively.
Is online trauma therapy effective?
Yes. Research shows that online trauma therapy is as effective as in-person care for PTSD, anxiety, and related concerns. Telehealth supports meaningful therapeutic connection while offering flexibility and privacy. Read more about what to expect.
What happens during the first session?
We’ll explore your current concerns, relevant history, and therapy goals. I’ll review confidentiality and outline a treatment plan that aligns with your needs.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is protected by law and by the ethical standards of my profession. I also check in regularly to ensure your privacy and expectations around trust are honored.
Can therapy really help with trauma?
Yes. Trauma-informed therapy can reduce distress, improve emotional regulation, and help restore a sense of safety, identity, and connection. Treatment is personalized and progresses at your pace.
